拍品描述
A BLUE AND WHITE ‘PRUNUS AND ICE CRACK’ PHOENIX TAIL VASE, YENYEN, KANGXI PERIOD

China, 1662-1722. Superbly potted, the baluster body surmounted by a tall trumpet neck, the exterior finely painted with flowering prunus sprays reserved on a blue 'cracked ice' ground, with dentil borders around the mouth and the foot, a geometric band below the neck, and a double circle to the recessed base.

Provenance: Collection of Col. Snowden Fahnestock, New York, United States. Property of a Mid-Atlantic institution, gifted from the above in 1980, and thence to the present owner. The base bears two old labels: one inscribed ‘Old Chinese Plum Blossom Vase: Beaker form with hawthorn, symbol of spring, on a ground blue of the sky after rain outlined [...] cracked ice. Kang-hsi period. 1668-’ and the other, ‘7795 China 3011,’ along with a museum inventory number ‘80.20.’ Colonel Snowden Andrews Fahnestock (1886-1962), a member of a prominent New York banking family, was a World War I and II veteran. His brother Gibson Fahnestock later lived in China. In 1910, Snowden married New York socialite Elizabeth Maury Bertron, daughter of banker Samuel Reading Bertron. Their wedding was particularly notable, with a long guest list featuring some of Manhattan's most prominent families, including the Roosevelts, Delanos, Hewitts, Rives, Iselins, Minturns, Vanderbilts, and Whitneys.
Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and firing flaws, including pitting, dark spots, and small firing cracks. Expected fritting and shallow chips to the foot.
