They could be also used for the storage of scholar's objects such as brushes, inksticks and seals. The example represented in the woodblock print features a short base and a canted lid, while the present lot has a tall bass and flat lid. For similar chests, see a slightly smaller one with a collapsible mirror stand fitted into the top tray included in Shing Yiu Yip et al., Chan Chair and Qin Bench: The Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture II, Hong Kong, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1998, pl. 64, pp. 184-5. An even smaller chest of the same type, with its lid and base reinforced with brass corner strips, is illustrated in Robert D. Jacobsen and Nicholas Grindley, Classical Chinese Furniture in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1999), no. 67, pp. 186-7. (Fig.2) For another example also featuring intricately incised metalwork, refer to the exhibition catalog Splendor of Style: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Taipei, National Museum of History, 1999, pp. 182-183, from the collection of Mr. Lin Muhe. Beyond the metalwork, this 16th-century chest is also adorned with exquisite Imperial-style carvings on the door panels, lid edges, and base.
