拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION A GILT-BRONZE 'DRAGON' GUI-FORM CENSER Xuande Mark, 17th century Heavily cast in high relief, the compressed globular body rising from a short splayed foot to a flaring rim, the body decorated with a sinuous three-clawed bushy-tailed dragon on each side amidst swirling ruyi-shaped cloud scrolls, all richly gilded to highlight the design against the plain, coppery-bronze ground, the shoulders flanked by a pair of mythical elephant-head handles with trunk and tusks and a lions mane, the base cast with six-character Xuande mark within a recessed rectangular panel finished with gilding, the base slightly convex. 7 1/2 in (17.8cm) across handles; 5 3/16in (13.3cm) diam across rim Footnotes 十七世紀 「大明宣德年製」款 雲龍紋簋式銅爐 See Sotheby's Hong Kong, 5th October 2011, lot 1943, for another gilt-bronze example of similar fine casting and attributed to the Xuande period. This type of cast bronze censer has raised considerable debate as to the period of production. With arguments, both in favor of a Xuande period designation (1426-35), or indeed as apocryphally marked, but of 17th or 18th century manufacture. Certainly, dynamic scenes of dragons amidst clouds can be found on Xuande period porcelains and lacquer of the period. For another example of this form, see the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong exhibition 'Arts from the Scholar's Studio', Fung Ping Shan Museum, Hong Kong, 1986, Catalogue no. 139, and later sold as late Ming dynasty, 17th century at Christie's Hong Kong, 27th May 2008, lot 1912. Like the current incense burner, its vigorous high-relief casting is clearly related to carved lacquer of the period. Compare also a censer of this type, with a Xuande reign mark and possibly of the period, included in the exhibition 'The Second Bronze Age. Later Chinese Metalwork', Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London, 1991, Catalogue no. 44. See also a related Xuande-marked bronze incense burner sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 6th April 2016, lot 3664, from the collection of Robert E. Kresko, that has more sinuous dragons with bifurcated tails replacing the bushy tails of the example offered here. It is also illustrated by Philip K. Hu, Later Chinese Bronzes, The Saint Louis Art Museum and Robert E. Kresko Collections, Saint Louis Art Museum, 2008, pp. 122-125, no. 24. Another similar example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, attributed to 18th century, is illustrated by Rose Kerr, 'A Preliminary Note on Some Qing Bronze Types', Oriental Art, vol. XXVI, no. 4, 1980/81, fig. 10; and another ungilt example with loose rings attached to the handles, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30th May 2016, lot 3009.
