拍品描述
PROPERTY FROM A SAN FRANCISCO PRIVATE COLLECTION A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A FEMALE IMMORTAL 16th/17th century Standing in a solemn posture clasping her hands under a cloth at her chest to hold an offering, the rounded face with delicate features framed by an elaborate 'phoenix' crown tied with curled ribbons behind the large earrings, a long ribbon draped over the 'cloud' collar and tasseled shawl, an elaborate ensemble of jeweled necklace over the long robe, the upturn tip of the shoes emerging from the hem, the interior cast hollow with two short pegs at the rim for placement, the metal gilded all around with a few areas of encrustation. 20 1/2in (52.1cm) high (wood stand). Footnotes 十六/十七世紀 鎏金銅仙姑立像 Provenance: Purchased in 1968, Hong Kong, The Great Wall, by repute. 來源: 據 1968 年 購於香港 The Great Wall 古董行 This figure, by her 'phoenix crown' is most likely Xiwangmu, the Queen immortal of the Western paradise. who was one of the oldest female deities of China. In some early classic texts, such as Shanhai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas, finished in 4th century BC), Xiwangmu was depicted as wild and feral befitting her ferocious personality. She emerged as a fully-fledged Daoist goddess in the scriptures of the Shangqing (Highest Purity) school of religious Daoism during the Eastern Jin dynasty, 4th century. Texts described her as having the appearance of a human woman, though she retained some animal characteristics — notably, tiger's teeth and a leopard's tail. Xiwangmu is a patron deity of women and a divine teacher who could control the length of people's lives, with the cultivation of virtue and immortality. In the Ming dynasty, her appearance further developed as a serene female figure, usually similar to other female deities' face, such as Guanyin and Bixia Yuanjun. For a slightly smaller and finely cast seated gilt bronze figure of this type, see one sold at China Guardian, May 18, 2014, lot 3730. Compare the appearance of the current lot with a gilt bronze figure of Bixia yuanjun, Ming dynasty, in the British Museum, London (acc.no.1908,0420.6). An unusual large gilt bronze figure of Bixia Yuanjun, Ming dynasty, was sold at Christie's New York, March 21-22, 2013, lot 1264. See also a gilt-lacquered bronze figure of Bixia Yuanjun, late Ming dynasty, which was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, May 29, 2018, lot 10. A comparable gilt lacquered bronze figure of Xiwangmu standing on a footed pedestal base was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, May 27, 2021, lot 18.
