拍品描述
Painting with tusche and colors on paper. Japan, 19th cent. This vertical format, beautiful colorful painting has graced some very famous collections, including the Swiss one of Tikotin, see the note below. The image - presumably inspired by a work of Hokusai, the famous Ukiyoe woodblock master and painter, who lived to 1849 - shows a tall Bijin arranging her complex hair style, held together by a kanzashi. She does this with one arm, reaching from behind. It is just peculiar that her fingers are definitely posed in the gesture for "demon banishment". Her face is only visible in the mirror image - elegant features, feminine and sensual. Very good flow of ink in the artist′s brush strokes in the long robes. SIZE 56,6 x 26,1 CM This painting comes from the collection of Eugen Biedermann, acquired in 1958 from Felix Tikotin, a major Swiss art collector, who reported that the work came to him from the French collector and dealer Samuel Bing. Felix Tikotin was known as a major Swiss art collector, fact is that he actually settled later in life in Switzerland (Mount Pèlerin) and that he changed is name. He was born 1893 in Liegnitz (Silesia), grew up in Dresden, later became architect of the city and opened an art gallery, then moved 1927 to Berlin, in the following year travelled to Japan and studied the culture there. Then immigration, gallery in Den Haag, hid his collection from the Germans, which was then stolen and later found again. 1960 foundation of the Tikotin Museum for Japanese Art in Haifa. Marcel Lorber (London), from whom we took over a respectable part of his large netsuke collection after his death in 1986, was a good friend of Tikotin – who died in the same year. Samuel Bing was a German-French art collector who was born 1838 in Hamburg. He came from a merchant′s family, became a French citizen 1876 and therafter one of the major collectors and dealers of his time. The term "Art Noveau" was shaped by him, because he named his gallery in Paris so, then exhibiting artists who are today world famous. 1880 he undertook a big East Asian journey, and after his brother settled in Yokohama (Japan), became a leading importer of Asian art. But he also founded his own studios that produced furniture and jewelry according to artistic design concepts and had his own pavilion in the Paris World Exposition with the name "Art Noveau Bing". He lived until 1905.
