A FINELY ENAMELED WHITE GLASS ‘LOQUAT & MOUNTAIN BIRD’ SNUFF BOTTLE, SCHOOL OF YE BENGQI

Beijing, China, after 1950. The flattened spherical body supported on a short oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck. The design is neatly enameled to one side with an orange mountain bird perched on a branch of fruiting loquat, and to the other with birds perched on bamboo and craggy rocks surrounded by peony blossoms, all below alternating pendent plantain leaves and ruyi tassels to the shoulder and a band of key-fret to the neck.

Provenance: The Joan and Ted Dorf Collection. Joan and Ted Dorf (1926-2020) were collectors of snuff bottles for over fifty years, in a lifelong passion that paralleled the deep love they felt for each other during their 67 years of marriage. Their enthusiasm eventually spilled over into collecting scholarly Chinese works of art as well. Ted served as a director on the board of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society (ICSBS) between 2006 and 2012, and was also its vice-president from 2009 to 2011. Despite a flourishing career in radio broadcasting, he always found time for collecting and co-chaired ICSBS conventions in Washington, D.C., and Palm Beach, Florida. The Joan and Ted Dorf Collection has been exhibited at the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, and most recently at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

The base with an apocryphal four-character mark Qianlong nianzhi in blue enamel.

Ye Bengqi (1932-1963) was known for meticulously recreating Imperial enameled glass wares, with a special focus on snuff bottles. His process involved committing the patterns of authentic enameled glass items exhibited in the Palace Museum in Beijing to memory and then painstakingly replicating them within the confines of his family's Apricot Grove Studio. Ye's works are so remarkably convincing that they have created significant difficulty in identifying genuine Qianlong works over the past 50 years. Today, Ye's creations are recognized as masterpieces in their own right.
