A LACQUERED WOOD TRIBAL MASK OF A LION, TUJI PEOPLE, GUIZHOU REGION, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Southern China. Carved from light wood with a central cross bar along the back with eye holes and apertures through the nostrils. Depicting a lion with a broad nose, protruding eyes, boldly detailed eyelashes, and a central bulge along its forehead. The exterior is covered in black, red, white, and blue lacquer.

Provenance: Khenghavars Paris, 31 March 2007, lot 307. From an Austrian private collection, acquired form the above. A copy of the old invoice accompanies this lot, signed by Marie Crouvisier, and dated 31 March 2007, identifying the mask as a Tuji tribal mask.
Condition: Extensive wear, flaking to the lacquer, nicks, signs of insect activity, chips, and losses.
