A SANDSTONE ANTEFIX OF A MALE DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD

Khmer Empire, 12th century. Finely carved with the bust of a male deity under a poly-lobed mandorla. The deity carved with thick lips, a broad nose, and incised eyes under arched brows, flanked by ears suspending pendulous earrings, the hair is tied to the top in a tall, cylindrical chignon.

Provenance: From an old French private collection. RD Collection Paris, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, losses, encrustations, structural cracks, and small nicks.

Dimensions: Height 38 cm (excl. stand), 45.5 cm (incl. stand)

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related Angkor period antefix, dated 12th-13th century, in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, reference number TC-394. Compare a related poly-lobed mandorla antefix, in the collection of the Angkor National Museum, from North Khleang-1-1.
