拍品描述
Yellow bronze. India, Gujarat, 12th cent., dated 1184 Four naked Tirthankara in meditative pose with hands folded in their laps sit in this miniature shrine, with a square, many-tiered base covered by a roof supported by four columns. On the frieze below them respectively is a pair of lions facing each other. On the roof is an open-worked zone, above a dome decorated with lotus leaves and a tiered closure similar to a stupa. Tirthankara, lit. “ford maker“, are the spiritual masters of the Jain religion. The last, Mahavira, was a contemporary of Buddha. On the conical base section is an inscription with the dating Samvat 1241, which is 1184 our time. HEIGHT 18,3 CM From an old Austrian private collection
