拍品描述
Tanjore painting with colors, gold and inlays. South India, approx. late 18th to 19th cent. Impressive depiction of Venugopala, as blue Krishna playing the flute is called, here powerful in the colors and ornamental due to sumptuous inlays. Krishna, the eighth incarnation of the high god Vishnu, in typical pose and generously decorated with jewelry, is playing an extravagant, small, long flute. He is standing under the crown of a tree and before a radiant white cow with calf. Beside him are the lovely shepherd girls, gopis, with whom he spent time. The gopis performed circle dances that he accompanied on his flute during the night. The two beauties could be Radha, which he married and the fertility goddess Sita. Decoratively effective is the frame with shiny, silver-backed glass inlays, each around 1 cm square. Mounted, the wooden plate shows strong weathering on the edges (especially on back). Age damage and blemishes, while the main painting is very well-preserved. SIZE 77,5 x 52 CM From an old German private collection
