Fire-gilded bronze. Tibet, 18th cent. Jambhala was also called Kubera and is the world guardian Vaishravana. He is the guardian of all treasures under the earth. In the present bronze sculpture, he holds a jambhara fruit in one hand, here formally adapted to pearls. In the other, a nakula, the pearl-spitting mungo. It is very rare to see so many of these pearl-spitting predatory felines. Jambhala sits with one foot on a conch shell lying on a little lotus pedestal. Very expressive design of facial features with flaming brows, lavish jewelry, crown and hair bun as well as heavenly garlands.
