A LARGE KOREAN EIGHT CONFUCIAN VIRTUES 'MUNJADO' EIGHT-PANEL SCREEN ANONYMOUS Korea, Joseon Period, 19th Century Eight Pictorial Ideographs (The Eight Confucian Virtues) (Munjado) ??????????? ???? ???? A set of eight Korean paintings, each depicting a character representing a Confucian virtue and paired with various flora and fauna Ink and colour on paper, mounted as an eight-panel folding screen Each painting accompanied with an inscription Each painting 80cm high, 35cm wide; The screen 151cm high, approx. 370cm wide 孝悌文字花鳥圖八幅屏風 朝鮮時代 紙本設色 - PROVENANCE: From a London Private Collection, purchased in South Korea in the 1970s ??: ?? ?? ?????, 1970?? ???? ?? - NOTE: Read from far right to left, the eight characters refer to the values of Confucian teachings of the Joseon dynasty know as The Eight Confucian virtues: filial piety, brotherly love, loyalty, trust,rites or propriety, righteousness or justice, integrity or honour, and humility or modesty. This screen, which is colourfully decorated with flora and fauna, would have furnished gathering places or children’s schools as learning tools. 孝 (hyo) filial piety 悌 (jae) brotherly love 忠 (chung) loyalty 信 (sin) trust 禮 (yae) rites or propriety 義 (eui) righteousness or justice 廉 (yeom) integrity or honour 恥 (chi) humility or modesty ? (hyo) ? (jae) ? (chung) ? (sin) ? (yae) ? (eui) ? (yeom) ? (chi) A comparable screen, decorated with the same motifs and characters but lacking accompanying inscriptions, was sold at Christie's New York, 18th April 2018, lot 144, and another in the same rooms, these ones unmounted, 22nd March 2002, lot 212, and in 21st March 2012, lot 1060. Compare a related screen in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, museum number M.87.267. A munja-chaekgeori (characters & books) screen is housed in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 2017.6. Another Yi Dynasty-period screen is housed in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, museum number 2017.178.
