Han Dynasty The pear-shaped body encircled by three concentric raised ribs each inlaid in copper with archaistic geometric patterns, the shoulders flanked by a pair of taotie masks suspending loose rings, covered overall with a rich patina with splashes of gilt and some malachite encrustation, all below a chevron band inlaid with a copper sheet encircling the rim. 30cm (12in) high

A vessel with copper-inlaid bands and chevrons may also be found dating to the mid-Warring States period, 5th century BC, illustrated in L. d'Argencé, Bronze Vessels of Ancient China in the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco, 1977, p. 131, pl.
