Mary Queen of Scots carved antique ivory triptych. The early 19th century carving is carved in full round with deep folds and finely carved embroidered features including lace. The lower section opens to reveal attendants being knighted. Triptychs of this type depicting a wide range of noteworthy individuals from history as well as subjects drawn from religious sources were produced from at least the mid-19th century. A triptych figure depicting a queen was shown at the Paris Exposition of 1855 (height 21 cm) and is illustrated in Elfenbeinkuste, by P.W. Hartmann, 1998-99, Vienna, p. 197, executed by ivory carver Perrin. Undamaged, in good condition. The hinges have appropriate oxidation. Measures 7.5 inches high. When opened it measures 5 inches wide.
