English 19th century George Jones & Sons hand painted game plates for Higgins & Seiter. The late 19th century set of six plates with a decorative crimson red and elaborate gilt rim accented with gilt beading. Various hand painted scenes at center depict game birds in natural settings. All plates signed on front bottom rim, W. Birbeck. Marked on reverse GJ & Sons New York, Made in England. Each bird is identified in red script along with the 17084 pattern number, including Partridge, Grouse, Quail, Red Legged Partridge, Woodcock and Snipe. Good condition, likely used for display purposes only. Measures 8.8 inches diameter. Higgins & Seiter located at Nos. 50 and 52 West 22nd Street, New York. The firm was organized just after the end of the Civil War by Colonel Charles Jacob Seiter of the 7th Regiment and brothers Barton B. and Arthur Higgins. The partnership was formalized in 1887 and the three men filled their warerooms with the highest grade and costliest home items imported from Europe. Sold together as one lot.
