拍品描述
Gilt carved late 19th or early 20th century lacquered ancestor shrine is either Chinese or Japanese. The ancestor shrine lamp was likely altered into a lamp in the 1950s by interior designer Mildred Warder. A two panel folding screen, also in this auction, (lot number 430) is from her estate and bears the Mildred Warder Design label. The gilt shrine has a hand painted six panel lacquered base with Chinese or Japanese characters. The base is topped with intricately carved temple scenes. The six panel temple has pierced and high relief carved gilt figures surrounded by foliate carving. In the center is a priest standing behind an altar. The base is carved with gilt openwork and has gilt floral feet. In good condition, craquelar on one of the black lacquered panels. Original silk shade shows wear. Measures 17 inches wide x 17.5 inches wide. Mounted as a lamp it measures 37 inches high. A under documented figure in America, Warder was active in postwar Japan as a Tokyo-based designer fusing American aesthetics with Japanese traditional crafts. A 2014 academic article is focused on Warder, its abstract follows. A Study on the Interior Design Offices Founded by American Military Officers (Part 2) AIDIA, 77-81 2014/11 Setsuko Katayama This study aims to make clear the existence and their specific characteristics of the interior design offices founded by American Military Officers in Japan. I investigated two interior design offices, which were established in the 1950s. Only a few people knew about them, but their American design methods had an effect on the Japanese interior design after the Second World War. This paper deals with one office, Mildred Warder. There was a showroom in the office which was decorated in an oriental style, or so-called Japonica style, which was favored then by American clients. However, what Warder Office pursued was not an eclectic style but was based on the design concept of William Morris, which respected the authentic hand-made techniques and arts. In addition, Warder Office was involved in developing some new technologies
