French or Italian Ecclesiastical 18th or early 19th century ceremonial cope vestment cape robe. The elaborate cope is embellished with intricately worked hand stitched ornate gold metal embroidery. The robe is entirely handmade. The ecclesiastical cope was worn by a high ranking papal clergyman. The fine red silk velvet is lavishly embroidered in fine purl goldwork. The high relief gold metal wire thread has been couched down in an intricate pattern of interlaced bands in foliate designs. The raised goldwork decoration appears to be padded and imitates carved fretwork or bands of leather. The intricate raised and skillfully hand stitched needlework is padded gold work onto a velvet ground with a laid work stitch over tiny bundles of gold thread. The embroidered cope hood repeats the lavish raised foliate pattern fit for a high ranking clergyman. The heavy velvet fabric and raised gold metal thread embroidery are surprisingly strong and stable. Condition overall is good. Measures 104 inches wide x 48 inches long. From the estate of a New York collector. There is an old string tag attached that most likely was an old collection inventory number.
