Rare carved 1844 English Charter Oak figural mirror. The high relief carved figural wooden frame includes a vast array of carved elements with heads on each corner, bordered by leaf and shell carved sides, which may reference the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The bottom rail is centered with an acorn studded wreath with a seated bear in the center and flanked by an angel with harp and a hand. The top rail has two medallions, one with an English lion in the center and reads, This is Our Charter, topped with a globe flanked by man and woman farmers. The other reads, Liberty with an eagle in the center topped with skull and crossbones and is flanked with blind justice and a man with a staff. A crucified figure of Jesus is centered on the top rail. Dated on front top center rail MDCCCXLIV (1844). Other elements include a beehive, star, sheaves of wheat, various animals, a castle or church with cross over the door. Remnants of London 1852 newspaper applied to the backing and there is evidence of apparent smoke discoloration on the back. This does not affect the carved frame in any way. In good condition. Measures 22.5 inches high x 32.4 inches wide x 3.5 inches deep.
