拍品描述
A WOOD CARVING OF CARP IN A WATERFALL

Japan, late Edo (1615-1868) to early Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely carved as a vertical column depicting a gushing waterfall with a pair of carp leaping upward to traverse the rapids. A pine branch juts out at the mouth of the waterfall.

HEIGHT 68.5 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections. One chip to the base and few age cracks.

In Asian lore, the carp is associated with good fortune and perseverance. Although the carp lives primarily in quiet waters, its symbolic meanings have led to a Japanese design convention of showing the fish arching upward, often mounting waterfalls.
