TANAKA IGA: A BRONZE 'DOUBLE-LOTUS' KORO (INCENSE BURNER), DATED 1702

Japan, Kyoto, dated 1702, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely cast, the lotus koro supported on bracket feet around a lobed base with a compressed globular stem rising to the primary bowl with overlapping lotus petals. The rim of the base is inscribed.

Inscriptions: Along the base of the rim, Tanaka Iga saku, Genroku jugo mizunoe-uma toshi, gogatsu hi chuzo kore seshimu, Betto Hoin, Gon-Daisozu, Gyosei ['Made by Tanaka Iga. This cast work was made by Tanaka Iga, and commissioned by Gyosei with the Gon-Daisozu title, the Betto status (chief priest), and the Hoin title (the rank attained with Buddhist Dharma's Laws), on an auspicious day in the 5th month of the Genroku 15th year of the year of mizunoe-uma (corresponding to 1702).'].

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting flaws, and traces of use.

The head office of Tanaka Iga Butsuguten is located in Kyoto. The company produces Buddhist goods, including butsudan shrines that are placed in many traditional Japanese homes. It is one of the oldest companies on Earth, being founded in the ninth century[1] and operating continuously since. Its 70th generation head smith was Masakazu Tanaka. The foundry was originally located in front of the Ninna-ji temple (Shingon sect Buddhism, Kyoto), specializing in bronze Buddhist altar-ware.
