NEMOTO SETSUGA: A FINE FOUR-PANEL 'CHRYSANTHEMUM BLOSSOMS' BYOBU SCREEN, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Japan, 19th century

Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold paint on paper. Mounted on four panels within a silk brocade frame attached to a wood screen with foliate metal fittings. Finely painted with peony blossoms issuing from craggy rocks near a shallow pool, a bird of paradise is perched on a stem and a pair of doves flies among the clouds. Signed SETSUGA utsusu [painted by Setsuga].

SIZE 185 x 92 cm (total)

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few scratches and some stains. The screen with usual traces of wear and age.
Provenance: German private collection.

Nemoto Setsuga (1828-1901) was the younger brother and pupil of Nemoto Yuga (1824-1866), an official Kano School painter who served Lord Ikeda of the Tottori Domain. Nemoto Setsuga followed his brother Yuga's footsteps and served as an official painter at the Tottori Domain. In addition to his brother, Setsuga also studied under Oki Ichiga and Kikuta Isu. He worked together with his master on the construction of the clan's new residence and was involved in the production of maps of the nearby three provinces of the regions in 1869. He was a professor at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting (Kyoto fu ga gakko).
