UTAGAWA KUNISADA I: ROKUSABURO THE CARPENTER

By Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) (1786-1864), signed Toyokuni ga
Japan, dated 1858

Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical oban. Signed Toyokuni ga; publisher Uoya Eikichi. Titled Daiku Rokusa (Rokusaburo the Carpenter) from the play Koma Mukae Tanomi no Irikomi.

The actor Ichikawa Ichizo III as Rokusaburo the Carpenter boldly wrestling a giant carp. This print was made to publicize Ichikawa's performance at the Morita Theatre in Edo in July 1858.

SIZE of the sheet 34 x 23.7 cm

Condition: Wear, slight browning of paper, some wormholes, creasing, trimmed margins, few tiny losses along the edges, partially backed by Japan paper, otherwise presenting well. Mounted on a paper cartouche with tape.
Provenance: From a private collection in Florida, USA.

In 1856, the actor Ichikawa Ichizo III was at the centre of a real-life drama at the Morita Theatre, when a samurai warrior became so absorbed in the action that he drew his sword, leapt onto the stage and attacked him. Several people who ran to the actor's aid were killed, but Ichikawa himself survived.
