By Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) (1786-1864) and Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu) (1826-1869)
Signed Toyokuni ga, in toshidama cartouche, and Hiroshige ga
Japan, dated 1856

Color woodblock print on paper. Oban triptych. Signed Toyokuni ga, in toshidama cartouche, and Hiroshige ga. Titled Neno-i Taro fighting a guard.

A dramatic kabuki scene of a samurai in the center and a rogue on the right battling attackers. The rogue, Neno-i Taro has stepped through a woven fence panel as he twists the hand of an enemy, forcing him to fall backwards, all while gripping a banner in his other hand. He wears a black fur vest over armor and a worried expression on his face. At the bottom center, the samurai reacts with alarm reaching towards the rogue but is stopped by a man grabbing his wrist from behind. Just above, the lady's attendant Shiraito peers through the curtains of a window. On the left, the nobleman Shimizu Yoshitaka grimaces as he holds up a folding fan, his frightened daughter hiding behind him.

SIZE of the sheet 24.8 x 36.4 (each)

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and trimmed margins. The colors slightly faded, some minor staining to the edges. Each print mounted on Japan paper and secured in separate passepartouts with tape.
