By Chikanobu Yoshu (1838-1912), signed Yoshusai Chikanobu hitsu
Japan, dated 1877

Color woodblock print on paper. Oban triptych. Signed Yoshusai Chikanobu hitsu; publisher Sato Shintaro. Titled Chokushi Kagoshima Touchaku no Zu (Imperial Envoy Sakakibara's Arrival in Kagoshima).

Interesting scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of a general waiting for the arrival of a messenger at Kagoshima. He sits on a red chair, looking intently to the side, wearing his dress uniform, including a black jacket with fringe epaulets and a sash across the chest.

SIZE of the sheet 36.7 x 72 cm

Condition: Good condition, vivid colors and impression, with minor wear. Some creasing, vertical margin folds, and very minor losses to the material.
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection.

Chikanobu Yoshu was a leading artist of the Meiji period, a time when Japan saw the reinstatement of the emperor as ruler and was undergoing rapid westernization. He was one of the most prolific woodblock print artists of this period, working with both traditional subjects, such as actors, courtesans, scenes of famous sites, beautiful women, and with topical subjects, such as the Satsuma Rebellion (1877) and the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895).
