KATO BUNREI: A GROUP OF TWO KAKEMONO

By Kato Bunrei (1707-1782), signed Ju goi no ge, Iyo no kami, Kato Bunrei ga with seal Iyo
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade coated paper frame, with wooden handles. The first freely painted with Bishamonten stroking his beard surrounded by thick clouds, the second scroll painted with a dragon amid clouds. Each signed, Ju goi no ge, Iyo no kami, KATO BUNREI ga [Painted by Kato Bunrei with the honorary class of the lower Jugoi (Fifth Rank, lower grade), and the guardian of Iyo Province]. One seal Iyo.

SIZE 97.5 x 29 cm (each image) and 180 x 41 cm (each incl. mounting)

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and slight browning of paper. Light creasing and minor stains. The frame with wormholes and traces of wear and age.
Provenance: From the private estate of Dr. Rudolf Maijlat (1923-2007) who was an Austrian diplomat.

Kato Bunrei (1707-1782) was born the sixth son of a Daimyo Kato Yasutsune (1657-1715) of the Oozu Domain of Iyo Province (in modern Ehime Prefecture). He was the teacher of Tani Buncho (1763-1840).
