A PAINTING OF A PEKINGESE, EDO PERIOD

Japan, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink on paper. Expressive painted with bold and vivid brushstrokes to depict a seated Pekingese, sealed and inscribed Hai tian ying, a location in Dalian, China. Dalian has a historic connection with Japan, as it was under Japanese control after defeating Russia in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. Mounted to a passepartout and framed in a wooden frame, behind plexiglass.

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few creases and possibly touch-ups.
Provenance: Collection of Gaston Lazard (1878-1956) and his wife Jane Levy (1886-1985), thence by descent within the same family.

Dimensions: Cut out size 34 x 28 cm, Size incl. frame 58 x 50 cm
