Description: Indian Art. Indian miniature and preparatory drawing depicting Layla and Majnun Pigments and gold on paper Mughal India, probably Lucknow, 19th century. Inside a triple frame, the central one decorated with delicate golden floral motifs, Layla is depicted under a canopy on the top a white marble building, while Majnun is portrayed outside of the palace, on a lawn accompanied by the dog of her lover. The dog is adorned with a golden collar and henna painted paws, in the peculiar Lucknow style. In the nastaliq' inscription below Majnun, he himself states that he is not ashamed of being humble toward the dog, because it followed the tracks of his lover. Surprisingly, this painting comes with a preparatory drawing (22 x 15,5 cm) in which the thematic representation is identical, but which includes servants and a domed building in place of the richly adorned golden canopy.. Cm 24,50 x 34,00.
