Description: Indian Art. A precious velvet Huqqa mat made for Her grace the Duchess of Devonshire India, 19th century. Round shape, the center and the edge are finely adorned with flowers and shoots embroidered with metallic thread with the technique known as "zardosi", consisting in the embroidery of gold and silver threads peculiar to Central Asia and India and employed mainly for the creation of royal garments. The inscription on the outer edge of the central medallion reads: "From Udayavira Singha Raghubansi to HG (Her grace) the Duches (sic) of Devonshire". The Raghubansi were a famous Rajput clan and Udayvira Singh was probably their prince.
