拍品描述
TWO PAINTING FRAGMENTS OF ATTENDANTS AT THE WATER-LAND RITUAL, QING DYNASTY

China, 19th century. Gilt, ink, and watercolors on paper. Each depicting five Daoist officials wearing colorful, elaborately patterned robes and caps, holding gui tablets decorated with star constellations, standing amid thick clouds. (2)

Provenance: Hungarian private collection. The back inscribed ‘X3 (one of 2).
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, minor tears, little creasing, minor losses, and staining.

Dimensions: Size incl. frame 82 x 65 cm

Framed behind glass, mounted on silk brocade.

The present lot depicts ten attendees at the Water-Land ritual. The subject matter is based on intricate portraits of religious deities, historical figures, and the contrasting lives of common people and tragedies. Despite its often mythological subject matter, parts of the Water and Land paintings that are dedicated to commoners show a realistic, often downtrodden and tragic view of their everyday lives, as part of the ritual to reflect on the suffering of the deceased. The history of Water and Land Ritual painting can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms period, with other early mentions during the late Tang dynasty.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related silk painting depicting Attendees of the Water-Land Ritual, dated to the Qing dynasty, 150 x 71.4 cm, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1929-40-202.
