? AN IMPORTANT SHEET GOLD ′FENGGUAN′ ORNAMENT

Philippines, Agusan del Sur, Talacogon, 1300–1600 AD. The ornamental headdress depicting two phoenixes amid pierced and cut geometrical designs. With a recent stand and a storage box.

This object was discovered in the ancient burial site of Talacogon, a municipality near the former Rajahnate of Butuan in the Philippines. Talacogon, once an important gold mining and trading port to ancient China, has yielded a wealth of artifacts, including buried stoneware from the Liao and Yuan dynasties. The area's connection to China is evidenced by the abundance of Yuan ceramics found there. This piece holds immense importance for both China and the Philippines, serving as a testament to the ancient trade and strong bonds shared between the two nations.

Already in Ancient China the Fengguan, also known as phoenix coronet, was worn by noblewomen for ceremonies or official occasions. One of the earliest phoenix crowns that has been excavated belonged to Empress Xiao of the Sui dynasty.
