The arch is centered by Garuda in high relief, flanked by pairs of Nagini and makara on both sides, all between foliate scroll to the top and a beaded border to the lower edge, showing neatly incised detail work. Finely gilt against a copper-red-lacquered ground. Made in several parts and mounted on wood.

Provenance: From an Italian private collection. By repute acquired from a noted estate in the Toscana.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, wear to gilt and lacquer, dents, scratches, and small nicks here and there. The wood base with age cracks and small losses with associated minor repairs.

Dimensions: Width 88 cm

This elaborate assortment of mythical creatures frequently surrounds Buddha images. One of each plane – aquatic, terrestrial, and aerial – they evoke Nature's acceptance of Shakyamuni as a truly enlightened being, conveyed throughout his hagiography. These creatures also function as mythic guardians, with toranas like the present often appearing above openings to sacred spaces to prevent the invasion of polluting elements.

Garuda is a half-bird, half-human creature that appears in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In Hinduism, Garuda is the mount of the god Vishnu and the sworn enemy of the Naga serpent. As a symbol of supremacy, this bird-king demonstrates the harmony between power and grace, creating a magical figure of strength and heroism.
