A BRONZE FIGURE OF VISHNU AND LAKSHMI, NAYAK PERIOD

South India, circa 17th century. The four-armed deity cast seated in lalitasana on a beaded double lotus base, the secondary arms holding his military attributes: conch and chakra, the right hand in abhayamudra and the left hand wrapped around Lakshmi’s waist. The goddess perched on Vishnu’s lap, one hand clasped around a lotus blossom, the other positioned to Vishnu’s back. Both adorned with beaded jewelry and dressed in intricate robes, their heads crowned with kiritamakutas and backed by shirashchakras.

Provenance: From an Austrian private collection.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting flaws. Tiny nicks and light scratches, the base slightly warped. One hand lost. The bronze with a fine, smooth patina.

Compare a closely related copper alloy figure of Vishnu and Lakshmi, dated to the 19th century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession number 520(IS). Compare a closely related bronze figure of Lakshmi-Narayana (Vishnu), dated to the 15th century, illustrated in P. Gururaja Bhatt, Studies in Tuluva History and Culture, from the Pre-historic Times Upto the Modern, 1975, plate 196 (d).
