UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI: SUMO BETWEEN FUKUROKUJU AND DAIKOKUTEN

Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical chutanzakuban. Signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga, censor’s seal Taka; publisher Wakasaya. Titled Fukurokuju and Daikokuten no Sumo (Sumo between Fukurokuju and Daikokuten) from the series Shingaku osana etoki (Moral Philosophy Illustrated for Children).

The God of Wisdom, Fukurokuju, wrestling the God of Wealth, Daikokuten, illustrating the moral lesson that there is no victory in fighting.

SIZE of the sheet 37 x 12.7 cm

Condition: Good condition with wear, few moldy spots, slight color fading, and slightly trimmed margins. Mounted with tape at the upper margin to a paper mat.
Provenance: An old German private collection, assembled between the 1970s and 1990s.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. The range of Kuniyoshi's subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Kuniyoshi's work is held in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Nasher Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum.
