拍品描述
A FINE LACQUER ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) CONTAINING A GILT SHAKA TRIAD

Japan, Edo period (1615-1868)

Shaka (Shakyamuni) is enthroned on an elaborate, multitiered hexagonal plinth with a lotus dais, seated in dhyanasana and hands resting in dhyana mudra, flanked by his bodhisattva attendants Monju (Manjushri) and Fugen (Samantabhadra). Monju sits on a lotus dais supported by a recumbent lion, the emblem of Monju, atop a small hexagonal plinth backed by a double nimbus. Similarly, Fugen is seated on a lotus dais supported by her iconic elephant. An elaborate trim painted gold with swirling clouds hangs above the figures with the interior lacquered gold. The exterior is covered in a lustrous black lacquer with chased metal fittings.

HEIGHT 39.5 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, little flaking to lacquer, few small nicks and chips, light surface scratches, a few losses, and minor old repairs, overall presenting very well.
Provenance: A private collection in France. A private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above.

This zushi encloses Shaka in his fully enlightened state. His two attendants serve as the Buddha's active agents in this world; Monju stands for the wisdom of Buddhism and Fugen for its practice, particularly meditation and teaching. The pyramidal arrangement of the figures, with the transcendent Shaka at its apex and axis, projects the enduring nature of the faith. The subtle contrast between the broad-shouldered stasis of the Buddha and the animation of the bodhisattvas and their mounts is a pleasing visual interpretation of the theological meaning of the iconography. This straightforward yet richly icon zushi reflects the tradition of older Buddhist sects from the Kamakura period.
