KANO SCHOOL: AN IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF ‘BATTLE OF YASHIMA’ SIX-PANEL BYOBU SCREENS

Japan, mid-17th to 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, gouache, watercolors, and gold paint on paper. Mounted on six panels within a silk brocade attached to a black-lacquer frame with metal fittings. Painted with a fierce battle, stretching unbroken across both screens, between two rival clans, the Minamoto and Taira, engaging one another on land and sea. Extremely detailed, the chaotic battle depicts two central armies clashing on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, as a third group belonging to the Minamoto clan descends the mountains behind the city of Yashima.

SIZE 173.5 x 352 cm (each)

Condition: Good condition with wear, small scratches, minor soiling, minor tears to the front and back with associated repairs and touchups, chips and scratches to the lacquer frame, and losses. Overall presenting very well.

The Battle of Yashima took place during the Genpei War (1180-1185) and is narrated in the Tales of Heike, an epic semi-historic account of the two rival clans, Minamoto and Taira, and their fight for control of Japan. The battle occurred in 1185 AD in Sanuki Province (Shikoku), which is now Takamatsu, Kagawa. During the battle, the Minamoto fooled the Taira clan by sending a small force to flank the city, which convinced the Taira to believe themselves outmaneuvered. The emperor Antoku and his entourage fled the city with their forces straight into the hands of the larger Minamoto force.

In a memorable account in the Heike monogatari, a beautiful court lady in a Heike boat placed a fan atop a pole and dared the Minamoto to knock it off. In one of the most famous archery feats in all Japanese history, Nasu no Yoichi rode out into the sea on horseback and hit the target on his first attempt. This scene is depicted in this lot in the upper register of the sea battle screen. The Minamoto were victorious, but most of the Taira fleet escaped to Dan-no-ura where they were defeated one month later in the final battle of the war, the Battle of Dan-no-ura.

Typical of this kind of narrative painting, the artist used brilliant mineral pigments to render the landscape elements and figures in considerable detail. Gold clouds isolate individual vignettes, a device that also lends considerable opulence and decorative impact to the composition.

Museum comparison:
Compare a pair of closely related Kano School six-panel screens depicting the Battle of Yashima and the Battle of Ichonotani, 153.5 x 367 cm, dated to the mid-17th century, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession numbers 2013.30.22.1 and 2013.30.22.2.
