KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI: THE GHOST OF OIWA

By Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), signed Saki no Hokusai hitsu
Japan, Meiji period edition (1868-1912)

Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical chuban. Signed saki no Hokusai hitsu; publisher Tsuruya Kiemon (Senkakudo). Titled Oiwa-san (The Ghost of Oiwa), from the series Hyaku monogatari (One hundred ghost tales).

Owia’s ghost manifested in the form of a disfigured paper lantern with smoke rising from its sides. The disfiguration, a parallel to her disfiguration by the poisonous face cream, appears to suspend the base of the lantern as if her jaw was agape.

SIZE of the sheet 25.5 x 18.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with good impression and colors, slightly trimmed margins, very minor foxing and browning of paper, commensurate with age. Mounted with tapes on a paper mat.
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. The reverse inscribed with the number, ‘3,’ and a paper label reading, ‘39-443, five papers […] one paper […].’

The story was originally a play for kabuki theater called Yotsuya Kaidan and was written in 1825 by Tsuruya Nanboku IV. The story tells of a young girl named Oume who falls in love with the married samurai Tamiya Iemon. Her friends try to get rid of Iemon’s wife, Oiwa, with a gift of a poisonous face cream. The poison seriously disfigures Oiwa, but she survives. Iemon eventually abandons his mutilated wife in disgust, which makes her go mad with grief. In her hysteria, she stumbles over and lands on a sword. She curses Iemon with her dying breath, and adopts various forms to haunt him, including a paper lantern.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) is one of the most renowned and influential artists in Japanese history. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai began his career as an apprentice in a woodblock print shop before venturing out on his own to pursue his passion for art. Over the course of his career, Hokusai created a vast body of work that included not only woodblock prints but also paintings, sketches, and illustrated books. His oeuvre is characterized by a relentless experimentation with style and technique, as well as a deep appreciation for the natural world and the beauty of everyday life.

Museum comparison:
An identical reprint with a similar seal and printed by the same publisher, dated ca. late 19th century, is in the British Museum, accession number 1921,0511,0.15.
