YOKOYA SOMIN: A FINE YOKOYA SCHOOL SHIBUICHI AND SHAKUDO KOZUKA DEPICTING FUKUROKUJU, DAIKOKU, AND EBISU

Japan, Yokoya school, first half of 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The migakiji (polished ground) shibuichi finely worked with a continuous frame of kebori and katakiribori with the three gods huddled together with jubilant expressions on their faces, the imagery continuing over the sides and to the reverse showing the attributed of Ebisu with a large fish in a basket next to a fishing rod. The reverse of shakudo and signed SOMIN and kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram).

Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear.

With a wood tomobako storage box and label naming the artist and the style of carving, katakiribori.

The artist is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1774 (H 08919.0). He was a direct descendant of Yokoya Somin I (1670-1733) and a student of Goto Mitsumori at the age of 29.
