Japan, mid-Edo period (1615-1868)

SIZE 69 x 40 cm, SIZE incl. frame 82 x 54 cm

Condition: Good condition with some light soiling and few small tears, particularly along the edges.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor (The Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai—NKBKHK) dated 10 October 2021, which certifies the present lot as a precious artifact.

Battle flags were used by samurai to identify their troops when engaged in battle or during processions.

The Fujiwara clan, associated with this banner, was a powerful family of imperial regents in Japan, descending from the Nakatomi clan and, as legend held, through them their ancestral god Ame-no-Koyane. The Fujiwara prospered since ancient times and dominated the imperial court until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. They held the title of Ason.
