KITSUNE AND BAKEMONO
EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY

Two Japanese makimono (handscroll paintings), probably from a set of three; in ink and colour and mounted on paper with gold flakes; depicting the story of a cursed man and his unfortunate encounters with kitsune (fox spirits), followed by his peregrination in Hell, where he meets a large number of bakemono (monsters); 26.5cm x 1200cm and 26.5cm x 1394cm respectively. (2)

Two handscroll paintings with the story of a man's unfortunate encounter with fox spirits: the opinion of a professional paper restorer is recommended. Some of the red ink has leaked through the paper. There is some damage and small losses to the paper which reappears throughout the scroll as it was rolled up. There are some professional repairs, and a little staining and creases to the paper. Please see additional pictures.
