- According to research by the Lem family, the source of these portraits would have come from the hand of Wulfaert van der Burch. (direct link available on rm-auctions.com) These would probably have been painted between 1477 and 1482. Maarten Lem (Bruges, ca. 1425 - Leuven, March 27, 1485), known as Maertin Lem in Flemish or Maertim Leme in Portuguese, belonged to a family of Bruges burghers (poorters). All that is known about his origins is that his father was also called Maertin. His mother is mentioned in later sources as one Jeanne de Portugal. He is said to have been born around 1425, but there are no mentions of him in sources before 1450. In 1450, at the age of approximately 25, he was sent to Portugal by the internationally active gold and silversmith Rombout de Wachtere from Bruges to monitor the activities of two salesmen who had to sell jewelery for De Wachtere. In order to obtain sufficient authority to resolve the problems with these facteurs in Lisbon, Lem asked De Wachtere for letters of recommendation to be signed by Isabella of Portugal. From 1450 to 1465 he traded between Flanders and Portugal: olive oil and cane sugar from Madeira. In 1456 he entered into a contract with King Alfonso V, acquiring a monopoly in the cork trade. In 1463 he was appointed escudeiro by Alfonso V, in recognition of his contributions to the years-long struggle against the Moors in Morocco. On that occasion he obtained his own coat of arms: three black merlettes on a silver field, commonly found in Portuguese heraldry. They are also visible in the arms on both portraits. Lem had a long-standing affair in Lisbon with a certain Leonor Rodriguez, with whom he had seven illegitimate children. These seven were legitimized by King Alfonso V in September 1464. They were officially given the surname Leme. Several of them settled on the Quinta dos Lemes on Madeira Island. Later, members of the Leme family moved to S?o Vicente near S?o Paulo in Brazil. In 1465 Maertin Lem returned to Bruges, possibley accompanied by his Portuguese son Antonio Leme, who served as his right-hand man, learning the trade and co-managing the trading house. Shortly after his return, Maertin Lem became involved in Bruges' urban politics. He successively held the position of mayor several times between 1467 and 1481. He married Adrienne van Nieuwenhove (1448-1492) in 1467, daughter of Nicolaas van Nieuwenhove and Adriana Metteneye. In March 1477, anarchy threatened in Bruges. Mobsters and troublemakers managed to ensure that sixteen former city administrators were captured to answer for their former administration, Lem was one of them. The people were annoyed with him, because in addition to his Bruges offices, he was also a regular at the count's court in the Prinsenhof. He was given nicknames such as 't cleen graefkin van Vlaenderen ('the little count of Flanders'), and den graeve Maertin zonder landt ('Count Maertin without land'). Maertin Lem became an important counselor of Archduchess Maria of Burgundy and, after her early death in 1482, also of Archduke Maximilian of Austria. He used a modified, quartered coat of arms in Bruges, with his Portuguese coat of arms in quarters 1
