拍品描述

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), Japan, circa 1800-1810 Surimono print, ebangire format, depicting two women (one smoking a pipe), having picked mushrooms and walking with their two servants in an autumn lakescape, under pale pink clouds, red seal of Hayashi Tadamasa lower right. The left part (where the signature was) cut and missing, wear. H. 39.8 cm L. 26.8 cm This print, a private commission (surimono) in long format, was originally about 50-55 cm long. It was an ebangire, a long horizontal sheet of paper printed with a print on one side and used for writing (poem, greeting, etc.). It was later cut (perhaps to approximate an oban format): the missing left end showed the landscape opening onto the expanse of the lake, and the Hokusai ga signature, as seen on a print of this work (similar except for the colors of the clothes) preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (A Mushroom-hunting Excursion, no. 21.10259) and coming from the collection of Frank Lloyd Wright. The latter is cut on the opposite side, with the right end missing.
