拍品描述
A PARCEL-GILT SILVER SKULL, PART OF AN ORACLE’S CROWN

Tibet, 19th century. Intricately crafted in the form of a skull with cavernous eye sockets and bared teeth, a flaming ornament is issuing from the top of the head and the grinning jaws and centered by coral and hardstone inlays.

Condition:
Good condition with some wear, small nicks here and there, as well as few dents.
Provenance: French private collection.

Weight: 225 g (total)
Dimensions: Height 25 cm (incl. de stand) and 10.5 cm (excl. the stand)

This skull was once part of an oracle’s crown or headdress, worn by Tibetan oracles whilst performing trances. Figures of bodhisattvas in their wrathful form also are often depicted wearing this type of headdress, with each skull representing one of the five ‘wisdom’ buddhas, the Five Dhyani Buddhas.

Auction result comparison: Compare to a crown formed by similar skull elements at Christie′s New York, The Doris Wiener Collection on 20 March 2012, lot 118, sold for USD 7,500.
