拍品描述
A BLACK JADE FIGURAL PENDANT, HAN DYNASTY

Jade. China, Han dynasty, 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD

The jade is carved in the round as a standing bearded man wearing a long, wide-sleeved robe and an official’s hat, with incised eyes and mouth. The pendant is drilled vertically from both sides for suspension.

The semi-translucent stone is of a black and greenish-gray tone.

Literature comparison: Compare a related jade carving of a mortuary figure, also dated to the Han dynasty, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 11.190.68. Compare also with three related jade figures from the Myers collection, dated to the Western Han period, published in Fillippo Salviati, Radiant Stones: Archaic Chinese Jades, 2004, Honkong, nos. 126-128.

Auction result comparison: Compare a closely related jade pendant, dated to the Western Han dynasty, at Sotheby’s New York in Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 18 March 2014, lot 163 (sold for USD 13,750), and another at Christie’s New York in Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 13 September 2019, lot 827 (sold for USD 11,875).

HEIGHT 5.3 cm

Provenance: Private Collection of Irene and Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022).
