KAWANABE KYOSAI (1831-1889)
Shoki and Oni
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink, gofun, gold, and colours on silk, depicting Shoki the Demon-Queller seen from an unusual angle in a dramatic pose, emerging from the swirling smoke, wielding a sword in one hand, poising to strike a terrified oni grabbed by the scruff of the neck in his other hand, an elaborate dragon-handled staff and a ritual ceremonial stand and banner in the foreground, signed Seisei Kyosai ga with seal, with a wood storage box inscribed on the outside of the lid Kawanabe Kyosai ga, kenpon chakushoku Shoki (Painting of Shoki in colour on silk by Kawanabe Kyosai), inside the lid signed Kogyo kan hei dai (Examined and titled by Terasaki Kogyo) with a seal Ko and Gyo. Overall: 179cm x 49cm (70?in x 19?in); image: 86.5cm x 26.5cm (34in x 10 3/8in). (2).
Shoki, the Japanese name for the Chinese Daoist deity Zhong Kui is perhaps one of the most reproduced figures in Japanese art. Popular legend has it that Shoki was a Tang Dynasty (618-907) student who committed suicide after failing his administrative examinations. Upon hearing of this Emperor Xuangzong (685-762) took pity on Shoki and posthumously granted him a doctor's degree. In return, Shoki's ghost visited the Emperor in his dreams and killed the demons that plagued the Emperor and caused him illness. This began the association between Shoki and demons.

By the mid-Edo period, the cult of Shoki had grown so large that pictures of Shoki the Demon-Queller (along with the Shichifukujin [Seven gods of good fortune, see lots 209 and 211], that according to Kyosai's picture diaries, they accounted for a significant number of the artist's commissions. Images of Shoki would typically be displayed during the Boys' Festival on the fifth day of the fifth month along with other heroes as a talisman to ward off evil and protect children from sickness.

The skilful use of gold for the details on Shoki's robes and the bolder and energetic outlines of the drapery contrasting with the finer brushstrokes defining Shoki's windblown hair, seen in this lot, compare well with a standing portrait of Shoki and an oni previously sold in these rooms, 6 November 2007, lot 197, and now in the Israel Goldman Collection, see The Israel Goldman Collection: Kyosai, exhibition catalogue, London, Royal Academy of Art, 2022, p.50, cat. no.9.
