拍品描述
IMAIZUMI NARIYUKI (SEISHI, ACTIVE CIRCA 1910-1950)
A Black-Lacquer Natsume (Tea Caddy)
Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, 20th century
The lustrous roiro ground decorated in gold, aokin, silver, shell, and polychrome togidashi maki-e with two overlapping peacock tail feathers extending from one side of the cover towards the bottom of the box, other birds' feathers such as pheasant and dove scattered all around on the ground, the inside of the lid embellished in gold takamaki-e with gingko and maple leaves on a nashiji ground, the inside of the box and base also of rich, dense nashiji; the base signed in gold lacquer Seishi saku with a kao; with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed and signed on the outside the lid Hane maki-e natsume (Feather-decorated maki-e tea caddy), Seishi saku with a kao. 8cm x 7.7cm (3 1/8in x 3in). (3).
Few facts are known concerning the outstanding and highly versatile lacquer artist Imaizumi Nariyuki but it is thought, judging from the style of his works, that he was active from about 1910 to about 1950; the Irving Gould Collection included a suzuribako with a view of Matsushima contained in a storage box signed by Nariyuki and stating that it had been viewed by the Showa Emperor on a documented visit to Ibaraki Prefecture in November 1946.
