AN INLAID AND GOLD-LACQUER MATCHING SET OF BUNDAI (WRITING DESK) AND SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS)
Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, early 20th century
Each decorated with classical scenes of a bridge with willows, a waterwheel, and jakago (gabions), signifying Uji in southern Kyoto, a place famous in classical literature, lavishly lacquered in several shades of gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, fundame, kirikane, and nashiji with embellishments of inlaid shell, the suzuribako with a rounded rectangular kabusebuta (overhanging lid) finely decorated with willows trailing over a bridge over the Uji River, with a waterwheel turning in the stylised waves beside two stone-filled jakago, the design extending over all four sides of the box, the inside of the cover decorated with tied bundles of brushwood leaning against a large cherry tree against a dense nashiji ground, the interior of the box similarly executed with a continuation of the design and the cherry blossoms repeated again in the silver suiteki (water dropper), with a fitted frame and ita (baseboard) containing the suzuri (ink-grinding stone), two writing brushes, one paper pricker, one paper knife and an inkstick holder, each fitted with silver mounts and gold-lacquered on the nashiji with flocks of chidori (plovers), the box rims of silver, the bundai of standard form with fudegaeshi (raised sections to left and right), lacquered with a moored boat tied around the trunk of a willow tree on the banks of a river adrift with three jakago, the ten silver fittings to the corners and sides of the top and the ends of the fudegaeshi chiselled with floral designs, the legs silver-lined and gold-lacquered with dense flakes of various shapes and sizes and lined in silver, both unsigned; with two lacquered storage boxes, one for the writing box inscribed Yanagibashi maki-e onsuzuribako and one for the bundai inscribed Yanagibashi maki-e onbundai. The suzuribako: 4.2cm x 23.5cm x 26.7cm (1 5/8in x 9?in x 10?in); the bundai: 13cm x 36.5cm x 66cm (5 1/8in x 14 3/8in x 26in). (12).
The present lot was sold at auction on 29 November 1928, Tokyo Bijutsu Kurabu (Tokyo Art Club), property of the Chouso and Ogawa families.
