拍品描述
A magnificent Japanese oshi-e tapestry, c.1890, depicting craftsmen and sculptors carving and chiselling a giant Nio statue, beneath them a bijin and her children fascinated by the creation of the fearsome temple guardian, all with embossed fabric on a gold-speckled silk ground, signed Seppo, 112 x 70cm, the wood frame carved with millefleurs incorporating chrysanthemum and scrolling leaves, 127.5 x 84.5cm overall Oshi-e is a Japanese handicraft that became popular in the Edo period, believed to have started with Kyoto's aristocratic classes, before spreading to the wider population. Meaning 'pressed picture', the technique involves folding and pressing scraps of fabric, such as kimono cloth, and washi paper to create an image. It is still a popular pastime today, ranging from masters creating complex scenes, to do-it-yourself kits available for crafting at home.
