拍品描述
A BRONZE MODEL OF A QILIN
17th century
The sturdy beast cast seated on its haunches, its head modelled with bulging eyes and a broad, flat nose, the mouth agape revealing sharp fangs, all below pricked ears and a single horn, the brows, mane and tail finely detailed with incised markings. 43cm (17in) high.
十七世紀 銅麒麟

The qilin is one of the animals mentioned in the 'Book of Rites', together with the dragon, phoenix and tortoise. It is a creature of good omen and symbol of longevity, felicity, illustrious offspring and wise administration. It supposedly has a fleshy horn on its forehead, a body like a horse and is covered with scales like fish.

The present figure is remarkable for its very large size and life-like posture. A 17th century bronze qilin incense burner, with related striated casting of the tail and scales on the chest, is illustrated by R.D.Mowry, China's Renaissance in Bronze, Phoenix AZ, 1994, pp.222-223, no.58.
