拍品描述
A 'CHICKEN BONE' JADE GROUP OF A BOY, ELEPHANT AND VASE
Ming Dynasty
Finely carved as a smiling boy with two tufts of hair holding a baluster vase on a large caparisoned elephant, the large animal with lotus leaf-like ears and almond-shaped eyes above long sharp tusks flanking a curling trunk, the stone of mottled grey and brown tone. 7cm (2 3/4in) high.
明 雞骨玉童子'太平有象'把件

Provenance: Joseph (1938-2005) and Bella (1941-2011) Shapiro, and thence by descent

來源:Joseph Shapiro (1938-2005)和 Bella Shapiro (1941-2011)舊藏,並由後人保存迄今

The subject matter of a boy riding an elephant forms many multiple layers of meaning and auspiciousness. The phrase 'ride an elephant' (qi xiang 騎象), has a similar pronunciation as ji xiang (吉祥), meaning good fortune. Furthermore, the 'vase' (ping 瓶) which puns with 'peace' (ping 平), and elephant (xiang 象) which also means 'sign' or 'portent', forms a rebus for the phrase taiping youxiang (太平有象), meaning 'Where there is peace, there is an omen (or elephant!)'.

See a related jade elephant but with a foreigner, Yuan dynasty, illustrated in Virtuous Treasures: Chinese Jade for the Scholar's Table, Hong Kong, 2007, no.97, which was later sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, The Songzhutang Collection of Early Jades, 30 May 2017, lot 65. Compare also a green and russet jade 'elephant and boy' group, Ming dynasty, which was sold at Bonhams London, 16 May 2019, lot 212.
