拍品描述
A MUGHAL GOLD KOFTGARI CEREMONIAL DAGGER, KHANJAR, NORTH INDIA, 19TH CENTURY
The Khanjar and scabbard are made of steel and show a distinctive, closely-meshed pattern reminiscent of curled waters, resembling the famous Damascus steel. The gold-damascened handle is in the form of an ibex head and with foliate and scrolling borders. The long, curved blade is inlaid to one side in gold wire with a floral emblem, the similarly decorated scabbard with a foliate band along the edges and ending in a bud-shaped tip.

Provenance
: Old German private collection, acquired before 2007.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, the blade with few tiny nicks, a dent near the tip, and light surface scratches.

Weight: 786 g
Dimensions: Length 47.1 cm

The art of Koftgari-damascening was brought to India by Persian craftsmen after the Mughal ruler’s invasion in the 16th century. In India, it was mainly used as a means to decorate arms and weaponry. In this technique, the surface of the metal object to be ornamented is evenly scratched to create a rough, finely lined surface, heated on a stove until red hot and then allowed to cool naturally. The object is then clamped and silver or gold wire is laid on the abraded metallic surface and pressed. Then the wire is further flattened with the aid of opni or moonstone. Larger areas such as the tip of the dagger are usually executed in silver or gold leaf.

Literature comparison:
For a similar khanjar dated to the late 18th century see Robert Hales, Islamic and Oriental Arms and Armour, 2013, p. 66, no. 139.
